Celebrating 50 years
It has almost been 50 years since what was then known as the Parkroyal Motor Inn caused a stir on the Brisbane skyline with its quirky, curvaceous façade and vibrant paint job. It was like nothing sleepy Brisbane had seen before and was designed to bring an international edge to our growing city.
There was a media frenzy amidst the development of the hotel, which at the time was the largest motel in Australia. Steeped in controversy and excitement with talk of the colourful paint and scalloped façade.
Finally, the excitement culminated in the official opening, conducted by Lord Mayor Clem Jones on Friday, 11 April 1969.
If only the walls could talk. Since its opening, the hotel has not only witnessed Brisbane grow into the modern, buzzing city it is today, but has experienced some change (and challenges!) of its own.
It changed names to Royal on the Park in 2000, was treated to a renovation in 2011 and witnessed not one, but two floods. The devastation of the 1974 floods can still be remembered by the flood marker in the lobby. Less devastating in 2011, the flood waters merely lapped at the lobby doors, however flooded the basement and drove the hotel to close for four days. Not to discriminate when it comes to disasters, the hotel has also weathered a fire which broke out on the 11th floor in 1984, forcing guests and staff to evacuate.
Having played host to everyone from prime ministers to princesses and celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Mick Jagger, ACDC, John Farnham, The Hoodoo Gurus, Sir Cliff Richard, Simon & Garfunkel, Billy Joel, Kylie Minogue, and Phil Collins, the hotel would be sure to have many, many more stories to tell.
One fire, two floods, two names, 50 years of life, 153 rooms and suites, over 1450 crystal chandelier bulbs and countless stories to tell, this birthday won’t be one to miss!
